If you are undertaking mindfulness CBT training, you will be developing knowledge of your own type of negative or warpy thoughts through meditation and through the homework exercises. Everyone’s warpy thoughts are different. The pattern of warpy thoughts and vulnerabilities varies between individuals. Young men and women may hold different warpy thoughts compared to older adults, as will married and divorced people. Adult men are alarmed and upset by employment and financial issues to a greater extent than adult women.39 Family and relationships, on the other hand, are more important to women. Relationships are a key focus for all young adults.
It is important to understand your sources of vulnerability because it helps you to understand yourself. It also allows you to build up your problem-solving skills to fortify yourself! First, you learn what triggers the negative thoughts that rule and capture your attention, leaving no room for living in the present and no room for enjoying just ‘being’. Then, through mindfulness and other means, you learn how to disassociate from these powerful thoughts.
The homework for step four is the same as for step three. Practise the breathing meditation on a daily basis. Continue to collect and note both positive events and negative thoughts and your responses to them. During meditation you recognise that warpy thoughts and emotions will intrude but the response you offer is a passive one. You simply remind yourself to stay centred in the here and now rather than to dwell on problems from the past or tackle problems of the future.
